  • Photography: The Modern day Heirloom.

At Noble Ink, we believe that the journey of a photograph doesn’t end when you hit the shutter – it ends when you hold the result in your hands.

Photography has existed in various forms since the early 1700s, but these methods resulted in products that weren’t permanent. It wasn’t until 1826 when French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce captured “View from the Window at Le Gras” using a device now commonly referred to as a “camera obscura” that permanent photography was thought viable.

By exposing a polished pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea to sunlight for what is estimated to between 8 hours to several days, Niépce caused the image make an impression on the plate. This experiment marked the birth of the heliographic method and the first realisation of permanent photography as a whole, though the term wouldn’t be coined until 1839 by Sir John Herschel.

From sun etching to a simple press of a button, photography as we know it has gone through a radical transformation over the centuries.

With the introduction of film based photography, the popularity of the process skyrocketed though great care was taken as rolls had a limited supply and development times could range between 2 – 3 weeks. The whole process was far from today’s INSTANT era.

These days, we carry thousands of images on our digital devices. Taking photos using phones or DSLR cameras, saving family pictures from social media or receiving them via email and messages. This allows us mulitple different ways to store our photos. But while digital storage is convenient, it’s also remarkably fragile.

The Digital Dilemma: “out of sight, out of mind.”

We’ve all been there: a lost phone, a corrupted hard drive, a forgotten cloud password, or a message “storage is full” resulting in frustration and the loss of years of memories. Digital files are “out of sight, out of mind.” They sit in a virtual gallery, rarely revisited and easily deleted.

The Power of the Print: Preservation and Presence.

Choosing to print your photos isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about preservation and presence. Here is why physical prints win every time:

    • Connection: There is a unique emotional weight to holding a photograph. A physical print engages your senses in a way a glowing screen never can.
    • Legacy Security: Prints don’t require software updates or battery life. A high-quality print can sit in an album for a century, ready for the next generation to discover.
    • Curated Storytelling: Printing forces you to choose your best moments. Instead of 50 blurry shots of last nights sunset, you have one beautiful, tactile memory that earns a place on your wall or in a heirloom album.
    • Art in the Everyday: Your life’s milestones deserve better than a folder on a hard drive. Printing turns your personal history into home decor, making your space feel truly yours.

In a world of fleeting digital scrolls, a printed photo is a permanent anchor. Don’t let your best memories stay trapped behind a screen—bring them into the light!

Choosing the Perfect Finish: A Quick Guide to Paper Types

Picking the right paper is just as important as the photo itself. The finish you choose determines how colors pop, how shadows look, and how much glare you’ll see when your photo is on the wall. Here is a breakdown of the most popular professional options:

Gloss: This finish offers the most vibrant colors and sharpest details. It’s perfect for high-impact landscape shots where you want deep blacks and maximum “wow” factor. Just be careful—glossy prints are prone to glare and show fingerprints easily.

Matte: Ideal for a soft, artistic look. Because it has a non-reflective surface, matte is the best choice for photos displayed under bright lights or in frames without glass. It’s a favorite for black-and-white portraits and more “intimate” scenes.

Lustre (or Satin): Often called the “professional’s choice,” lustre strikes a perfect balance between glossy and matte. It provides the rich color of a glossy print but features a subtle, pebbled texture that hides fingerprints and significantly reduces glare.

Fine Art / Cotton Rag: If you want your prints to last for a century, this is the gold standard. These thick, acid-free papers use natural fibers (like cotton) and are museum-grade, making them the preferred choice for galleries and high-end archival preservation.

Wall Paper adhesive (PhotoTex) / Wall Dots easily applied and removed from walls.

Finding the Right Fit: A Guide to Standard Print Sizes

Choosing the right size is the final step in bringing your digital memories into your physical home. Whether it’s a small snapshot for your desk or a bold statement piece for your living room, the size you choose sets the tone for the space

Small & Intimate (Desk & Shelf Displays)

4 x 6″ (10 x 15 cm): The most popular size for standard photo albums and small frames. It matches the aspect ratio of most smartphones, meaning no part of your photo gets cropped out.

5 x 7″ (13 x 18 cm): Slightly larger and ideal for tabletop portraits or group shots. It offers a bit more detail than a 4×6 without taking up too much space.

6 x 8″ (15 x 20 cm): A great “space-saver” that still catches the eye, perfect for bedside tables or small office nooks.

Medium & Professional (Gallery & Wall Displays)

8 x 10″ (20 x 25 cm): A classic choice for professional portraits and awards. It has a substantial presence that makes it a favorite for framing on a hallway wall.

11 x 14″ (28 x 35 cm): If you want a wall display with a striking visual impact, this is the go-to. It’s large enough to tell a story but versatile enough for a gallery wall.

Large & Bold (The Statement Piece)

16 x 20″ (40 x 50 cm) and Beyond: These large-format prints are designed to be the centerpiece of a room, such as above a sofa or fireplace.

20 x 30″ (50 x 76cm) Ideal for landscapes or wedding photos, these offer a “gallery-like” focus and can transform an empty wall into a personal art installation.
We can of course print at the standard A6, A5, A4, A3, A2, A1, A0 and LARGER to fit standard “off the shelf” frames.
